Lesson 2 – 1 John 2:1-11 (KJV)
Sin, Liars, and Walking in the Light
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
Important Doctrines Being Taught:
#1 Abstaining from sin is a top priority for the believer.
#2 Christians that sin have Jesus Christ as their advocate before God the Father.
#3 Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection was the price of man’s redemption and the appeasement of God’s wrath on man.
#4 Jesus died for men from all nationalities and tongues, the saints do not have a physical racial identity.
#5 Man’s actions, not his profession, reveal if he has fellowship with God the Father and has been cleansed of his sins.
#6 The Old and New Testaments are not two testaments, but one. They are the same message. The difference between the two testaments is clarity of message, not content.
#7 How men treat others reveal if they have fellowship with God the Father and have been cleansed from their sins.
#8 Those that hate and abuse others, and have a pattern of unrepentant disobedience to God are blinded by their sins and can not see or know the truth.
#1 What did John not want Christians to do?
#2 Who did John say was the Christian’s advocate with God the Father?
#3 How did John say true Christians could know that they really knew God?
#4 What did John call those that said they knew God, but did not keep the commandments of God?
#5 How did John say those that said they abide in Christ should walk? (live)
#6 What did John say the person lived in that hates his brother?
#7 What did John say had blinded the eyes of the one that hates his brother and walked/lived in darkness?
True or False Questions:
#1 Sin is not something the Christian has to worry about.
#2 Keeping the commandments of God is how the Christian knows he knows God.
#3 The true Christian lives and acts like Jesus did.
#4 If a person hates the people of God he is not a Christian.
#5 How people treat others reveals who they really are.
